Founded by deep diving pioneers and the team behind the rediscovery of Mars Makalös.

Ocean Discovery documents underwater environments for Swedish public agencies, international research groups and offshore contractors — from the Swedish Accident Investigation Authority and the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management to the UK Ministry of Defence and Royal Navy. The company was founded in 1995 in Västervik by Ingemar Lundgren together with his brothers, including Richard Lundgren, rooted in Baltic Sea Technical Divers (BSTD) — one of Scandinavia's first technical diving groups and Trimix pioneers in the region.

In 1997 the Lundgren brothers joined one of the earliest Trimix expeditions ever made to HMHS Britannic — the 119-metre-deep Titanic sister ship off Kea, a wreck no one had dived since Jacques Cousteau filmed it in 1976. The team has since served as founding members of Global Underwater Explorers (GUE) and contributed to the discovery of more than 120 wrecks in the Baltic Sea. The rediscovery of Mars Makalös in 2011 — King Erik XIV's flagship at 75 metres depth northeast of Öland — became the genesis of the photogrammetric method the company uses today from Estonia to Franken.

Today the operation combines ROV-based photogrammetry, sonar and geo-referenced 3D workflows into measurable records — point clouds, orthophotos, 3D models — used directly in analysis, environmental investigation, accident inquiry and remediation operations. Since 2018, Ocean Discovery's documentation has contributed to more than 558,000 litres of oil being recovered from Swedish waters. We operate intervention-class ROV (Ocean Modules M500), side scan sonar and multibeam from Otto — our trailerable survey vessel, mobilised across the EU within days.

  1. 1995

    Ocean Discovery founded

    Diving company in Västervik. The same year, Baltic Sea Technical Divers (BSTD) is founded — one of Scandinavia's first technical diving groups and Trimix pioneers.

  2. 1997

    HMHS Britannic

    Brothers Ingemar and Richard Lundgren join one of the earliest Trimix expeditions ever made to the Titanic sister ship — 119 metres depth off Kea, the first dive since Cousteau in 1976.

  3. 2011

    Mars Makalös rediscovered

    King Erik XIV's flagship located at 75 metres depth northeast of Öland after twenty years of searching — the genesis of Ocean Discovery's photogrammetry at extreme depth.

  4. 2018

    HaV programme starts

    M/S Bremsund becomes the first wreck in the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management's hazardous-wreck programme.

  5. 2022

    M/S Estonia for SHK

    Photogrammetric documentation of M/S Estonia at 80 metres depth — basis for the Swedish Accident Investigation Authority's continued inquiry.

  6. 2024

    Six Karlskrona wrecks

    Brise, Bruin, Magdalene, Molund, Monestra and Östanhav documented 25 nautical miles southeast of Karlskrona.

  7. 2025

    HMS Cassandra for UK MoD

    British WWI cruiser at over 90 metres depth off Saaremaa, Estonia — sunk by a German mine in 1918. Ocean Discovery contributed to a detailed wreck survey for the Royal Navy: visual documentation, MBES and hull-thickness measurements to assess the oil-leak environmental risk.

  8. 2025

    Franken for Gdynia Maritime University

    German WWII supply tanker, 180 metres long, sunk in 1945 off the Hel peninsula — still carrying up to 1.5 million litres of fuel. Ocean Discovery, Waves Group and JD-Contractor carried out the most detailed survey to date: over 20,000 images combined into a photogrammetric 3D model alongside MBES data — one of the most advanced combined wreck surveys in the Baltic.
